When designing our arm cup wedge, we had an important decision to make during the development phase. Adapt the wedge to suit multiple pad mounting configurations, or simplify the design and build it around a specific product. We went with the latter, designing the wedge to work with the 51 Speedshop arm cups.
For any concerning time trial athlete, the connection at the elbow/forearm is one of the most important considerations. Attention to detail in this area ensures comfort, position consistency and most importantly, offers improvements in aerodynamic efficiency.
From working on the basic design to proof of concept in the field, we worked heavily on achieving the correct angle with our wedge prototypes. While we knew that we had the angle sorted, we were constantly battling against cup designs that failed to provide the required lateral support, to achieve a truly stable position. The 51 Speedshop arm cups filled this void, offering the adjustability and contact patch (length) and forearm wrap (curvature) we were chasing.
51 Speedshop entered the market through the release of the Factor Slick, featuring a 51 Speedshop front end. The founder of 51 Speedshop, Mat Steinmetz, is no stranger in the world of product design and position optimisation. He has consulted with industry heavyweights such as Cervelo and is a fit consultant to most household names in the triathlon community. The forthcoming products from the 51 Speedshop brand are the cumulation of knowledge and experience, and are Mat’s answer to improving comfort on the bike.
Ergonomics of the aero bar setup are commonly overlooked by most aero bar manufacturers and the 51 Speedshop arm cups are one solution for improving front-end ergonomics. With geometry that provides greater lateral and fore-aft support, as well as a tighter wrap for the forearm, the 51 Speedshop cups improve stability and support for the whole upper body.
With multiple planes of adjustment and reversible orientation, the 51 Speedshop cups provide unrivalled versatility of setup. Having experienced these pad placement challenges when working through position optimisation services with many of our clients, the 51 Speedshop design is the logical solution for increasing setup options.
